AI Sales Coaching: What It Is and When It's Worth Paying For
AI sales coaching explained in plain terms: practice roleplay, scored calls, and live-call cues. What it does well, where it falls short, and when it pays for itself.
What AI sales coaching means
AI sales coaching is software that coaches reps on sales conversations without a manager in the room. Depending on the tool, that means some mix of: practice roleplay against an AI buyer, scorecards on practice or real calls, and live prompts while a call is happening.
It is not a replacement for a good sales manager. It is a way to give every rep daily feedback when the manager has ten other reps and a forecast due.
The three kinds of AI coaching
Most tools do one of these well. A few, including LSR Coach, do practice drills and live-call cues in the same product.
- Practice coaching: roleplay drills against an AI buyer, scored afterward. Best for ramping new reps and sharpening a specific skill.
- Call scoring: the AI reviews recorded calls and scores them against a rubric. Best for teams with lots of recorded calls and no time to review them.
- Live coaching: cues during a real call — talk slower, ask a question, you missed the budget question. Best for experienced teams that want a safety net on live deals.
Where AI coaching falls short
It doesn't know your deal history, your champion's mood, or why the last three deals with this account died. It won't run your one-on-ones or set comp plans. If a tool promises to replace your manager, be suspicious.
It's also only as good as the practice reps put in. A tool nobody opens is a line item, not coaching.
When it's worth paying for
The math is simple: if one extra closed deal covers the annual cost, it's worth testing. Tools in this category range from about $20 per rep per month for self-serve products to enterprise contracts that require a sales call to price.
Worth it when: you're ramping reps, your team avoids roleplay because it's awkward, or managers can't review enough calls. Probably not worth it yet when: you have two reps and a founder who can coach every call personally.
How to evaluate one
LSR Coach is built around those four questions: a free browser drill with no signup, scorecards out of 100 with specific feedback, and public pricing starting at $20/month with a 7-day free trial.
- Can a rep start practicing in under five minutes, or does it need an implementation project?
- Does the scorecard tell the rep what to do differently, or just hand out a number?
- Is pricing public, or do you have to sit through a sales process to learn it?
- Can you try the actual product before paying — a real drill, not a video?
